Hidden Dangers in Muscle Cars

Muscle cars are beautiful cars and a visual reminder of simpler times and cleaner air. Ironically, they also have hidden dangers that can make life complicated and even lead to serious health conditions. Be aware of these risks so you can protect yourself while restoring that classic beauty.

Asbestos

One of the greatest dangers in muscle cars is
asbestos exposure, which can cause mesothelioma, a severe form of cancer. Commonly known as a form of lung cancer, mesothelioma can also affect the stomach, heart, and other vital organs. Certain muscle car parts of days gone, like brake pads, drums, and clutch assemblies were lined with asbestos because of its heat resisting properties.

How is this dangerous? Over time, even this resistant substance shaves off and forms dust, especially on braked pads and in the wheels. When working on these parts the dust becomes airborne and ends up in your airways.

Lead

Muscle cars contain a fair share of lead, not just in batteries and electrical connections. In addition, it was used freely in bodywork repairs, especially soldered joints. Lead chromate, a derivate, was also used in old paints. Since lead dust flies when restorers sand the car, it can be a serious hazard. However, even touching lead surfaces for extended times can be harmful.

According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), prolonged exposure to
lead can affect almost every system in the body. Kidney damage, nervous system problems, and brain issues are some of the more serious consequences associated with lead exposure.

Cadmium

Those vibrant shades of yellow in old muscle cars often were achieved by adding cadmium. This toxic element is also used in batteries. The CDC reports that exposure to cadmium can cause serious kidney or lung problems and may even lead to fatalities.

Phenol Residuals and Furfural

Muscle cars that have higher mileage also have a toxic build up of oil, grease, and dirt around engines, transmission, axles, and drive shafts. Residues from this coating include phenol and furfural, which easily penetrate the skin. Not only do the chemical compounds irritate the skin, but they can affect the central nervous system as well.
